Tasmania holidays take place in one of the world’s most unique and stirring places, a rugged island off the southeastern coast of Australia with a tremendously distinctive cultural and biological history. Its cities and rural settlements provide plenty of excitement and developed scenery, but it’s the island’s wilder face that draws many ecotourists and adventure travelers. Tasmania holidays of this nature take you across wild highlands and through deep temperate rainforest, up formidable mountains once locked in glacial ice and along windswept coastlines.

Many of Tasmania’s natural features could be considered iconic landmarks of the island. This brief overview of five possibilities suggests the richness of the Tasmanian landscape and the potential for engaging with it on vacation.

(1) The Swamp Gum: The Swamp Gum or Mountain Ash (Eucalyptus regnans) ranks easily among the world’s very tallest trees, exceeded only by the Coast Redwood and possibly the Douglas-fir of the American West Coast. This loftiest member of the eucalyptus genus, which inhabits cool, wet, rugged forests of Tasmania and southeastern Australia, is known to exceed 300 feet in height. The tallest-known individual is 327-foot Centurion, which grows in southern Tasmania.

(2) Mount Ossa: Tasmania is a rugged island comprised of old, eroded volcanic highlands. Chief among its peaks is 5,205-foot Mount Ossa in the Central Highlands, which can be visited in Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, one of Tasmania’s most well-known reserves. Its dark, jagged crown is formed of diabase (or dolerite), and has been shaped by glacial excavations of cirques. Its distinctive name stems from Greek mythology.

(3) Dove Lake and Cradle Mountain: Also preserved in Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park is one of Tasmania’s most renowned bodies of water, Dove Lake, a relict of the island’s Pleistocene glaciers which scoured out such basins. An iconic dolerite peak, Cradle Mountain, looms over the shimmering waters. Tasmania holidays of a rigorous sort might include a trek on the famous Overland Track, a long-distance hiking route that sets off from the Dove Lake/Cradle Mountain area.

(4) Cataract Gorge: The South Esk River, Tasmania’s longest and a major tributary of the Tamar estuary, flows through an impressive defile in Cataract Gorge in the northern part of the island. A variety of facilities, including a lengthy footbridge and a chairlift, provide visitors access to this rocky canyon and the South Esk’s boiling waters, which are particularly astounding during flood discharges.

(5) Bass Strait: This body of water separates Tasmania from the Australian mainland, and thus ranks as one of the island’s defining landmarks. It serves as a frontier for numerous sub-regions of ocean: It’s the western margin of the Tasman Sea, that portion of the South Pacific bridging Australia and New Zealand; and it’s bordered on the west by the Great Australian Bight, a huge bay of the Indian Ocean whose shore forms the concave “bottom” of Australia. The Bass Strait’s stormy waters are studded with numerous islands, including the well-known, biologically diverse Flinders Island off Tasmania’s northeastern coast.
